The Concept
Under the Rug explores the secrets and frustrations hidden beneath the cheerful facade of a picture-perfect 1950s suburban home.
Cheerful domestic music and sweeping motifs introduce In the Mood, establishing a world of spotless homes and carefully maintained appearances.
Werner Tautz's Glitterati Party begins with playful glamour but gradually darkens as hidden frustrations emerge. An exasperated housewife finally loses her patience, triggering an angry baritone saxophone solo from Moanin'. The music builds to an explosive jazz climax before settling into the expressive ballad My Foolish Heart.
The final movement revisits In the Mood, bringing back familiar sweeping motifs as the perfect suburban facade unravels and everything hidden beneath the rug comes to light.
